SHEFFORD SCOUTS

Shefford Scouts

About Scouts

The Scout Section is for young people, usually aged between 10½ and 14 years. A young person can come in to the Troop at 10 and may stay until they are 15 years old. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group.

Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities as part of their programme. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenges Awards and Activity Badges. Scouts take part in a balanced programme that helps them to find out about the world in which they live, encourages them to know their own abilities and the importance of keeping fit and helps develop their creative talents. It also provides opportunities to explore their own values and personal attitudes

Being outdoors is important and half the Programme is given over to taking part in both the traditional Scouting skills, such as camping, survival and cooking as well as the wide range of adventurous activities, anything from abseiling to yachting.

Shefford Scouts in 2010

This year is going to be a busy one for Shefford Scouts (and the Leaders!); we are planning a lot of activities all year long. January saw the Scouts running a Bring and Buy sale to raise some funds for the Haiti Earthquake Disaster Fund, Which raised £320. We had a very good Shefford Scout Group Quiz Night. February saw the Scouts camping again at the District Survival Camp; those that took part managed to stay warm in the shelters they built! Our trip to Woodlarks at the end of February was a very enjoyable weekend helping to get their campsite ready for the season; all the Scouts we took worked hard and although tired at the end of the weekend, enjoyed themselves. March brings a scuba diving experience for the Scouts and their families; let’s hope they don’t grow webbed feet! In April we're camping again and will be holding our annual District Chariot race, as well as parading at the District St George's Day Parade. The summer camp proved a great time for those that went to Tolmers.

Woodlarks 2010

This year’s trip to Woodlarks was another great weekend for our Patrol Leaders and Assistant Patrol Leaders. Whilst the weather was not as kind as it could have been, it rained very hard nearly all day on Saturday! Everyone enjoyed their weekend working hard helping to get the camp site ready for this year. We spent Saturday clearing leaves and tidying up the outdoor pool area, after lunch it was back to work moving very wet earth to a new area of the site, making sure the camp fire wood piles were covered with tarpaulins to try to keep the wood as dry as possible and there was a lot of wood to cover!  More leaf collecting to get the lower field clear, we cleared some of the woodland paths and used the wood collected to build a big camp fire. On Sunday we continued to clear leaves and even chopped down an old tree and removed the stump to give easier access to a hard standing area. By the time we were ready to go home, there was clear evidence that our work of the weekend had been worthwhile and the site was looking better for our efforts. We’re already looking forward to next year’s visit! Woodlarks website
